Indoor Calorie-Burning Activities For Kids

Author: Kathleen Burch  //  Category: Child Health

You don’t have to have a home gym for your child to stay active during rainy, cold and snowy months? There are actually a lot of things you could do at home or at some other place to keep your child occupied and active. Always try to make activity a fun family time. Playing with your kids keeps you in shape too.

Here are some indoor ideas.

A Fitness Center

Go to your local YMCA or gym to see if they offer activities for kids, like gymnastics, indoor basketball, volleyball, ping pong, tennis, kick boxing, martial arts, and track. You could even get your own workout while waiting.

Dance Lessons

Your kids can also be enrolled in dance classes to burn calories.

Skating Rinks

Kids would have fun ice-skating, roller-skating, or inline-skating without even realizing that they are getting a workout.

The Museum

Museums can be found in most cities, and they provide fun and educational activities for kids. You can also go to indoor nature centers or aquariums.

Restaurants That Offer Games

Places like these aren’t hard to find. Choose restaurants that offer the greatest energy burners, including laser tag and other fast-paced activities. They usually have salad bars, so eat light. Another great option is setting up a play room in your house.

In Your House

Gather some costumes, dress-up clothes, and accessories such as shields, armours, belts, crowns, wands, wigs, and such and put them in a plastic tub.

Boom box with dance music tapes or CDs to have family dance parties

Play camping in the living room, and don’t forget to build the tent.

Play hop scotch, Twister, charades, Follow the leader, Simon Says, and so on.

Paddle balls, indoor ball toss games, bean bags, juggling balls, hacky sack

Have an indoor basketball hoop and soft foam balls ready.

Prepare some jump ropes, skip it, kid-safe hand weights, and exercise stretch bands.

Household cleaning items can also come in handy. Many kids actually love to clean!

You could also do the “TV commercial boogie” when advertisements come on. You’ll be amazed at how much moving you’ll do to the soundtracks of those endless commercials! And don’t forget to boo when the junk food ads appear.
